First Reformed Weekly ~ 8/20/2017 (Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost)

Good afternoon everyone! Today, we welcomed Rev. Frank Ackerman back to the pulpit. Pastor Ackerman is a 1961 graduate of Houghton College, N.Y. He graduated from Western Theological seminary in Holland, Michigan in 1965. Since then, he has served churches in Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, and Leeds, N.Y. His message was "God is Abundantly Able", based on Isaiah 40 and Ephesians 3.

We also welcomed Phyllis Schuurman as our guest pianist/organist. Phyllis lives in Garfield and is a member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church of North Haledon. Phyllis provides music for several churches in the area as a substitute pianist/organist.

Pastor Christopher will be on break from now through August 26th. He will return next Sunday, August 27th. Please pray that it is a restorative time. If you have any pastoral concerns, please contact Elders Evelyn Leseberg or Frank Arnone. Christopher's Chat will also return next Sunday.

Saddle Brook Township Picnic

The Saddle Brook picnic is scheduled for Saturday, August 26th from 12-4pm at the Saddle River County Park (Otto C. Pehle area). We will have a table at the picnic. We will also be in charge of the dessert table from 2-4pm. If you are interested in working either table and/or donating a dessert, please sign up online at www.firstreformedsaddlebrook.com or on the hallway bulletin board. We ask that you bring a dessert that can withstand the heat. If you plan on donating a dessert, please bring it to the church between 10 and 11am the day of the picnic. If you cannot bring it at that time, you may bring it to the park. All those attending are required to register for free food coupons at any of the following locations: Town Hall, Library, Senior Center. For more information, please speak with Maya Marren or any member of the Missions/Outreach Committee.

Music Ministry Update

Thank you for participating in Susan Redvanly's farewell. Thanks to Evelyn Leseberg and the Worship Committee, piano/organ substitutes have been secured through the end of October. In addition, we have already received nearly a dozen profiles for a permanent Worship Leader/Music Director. The Worship Committee will be reviewing them and meeting with candidates soon. If you have any questions or would like more information, please see Evelyn or Pastor Christopher.

Sunday School Rally Day

The first day of the new Sunday School year is coming up soon. The kick-off will be held on Sunday, September 10th during the 10:30am worship service. All students will be dismissed to meet their teachers and classmates during the service. A luncheon will follow the service downstairs in the Van Wyk Fellowship Hall. Starting on September 17th, Sunday School will meet on Sundays at 9am. Classes are being offered for students entering pre-k through 8th grade in September 2017. CLICK HERE to register your child for Sunday School.

Bulletin Publishing

Starting in September, we need a Bulletin Coordinator - an individual or team that collects information for the weekly bulletin and then assembles and publishes it. This very important ministry includes the order of worship and key information for the congregation. The printing has to be done here at the church, but other parts can be done from home via Internet. There will be training and help. Please see Pastor Christopher if you need more information and if you are interested in serving.

Coffee Hour

Please check the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the upstairs kitchen for Sundays that remain open to host.

Ongoing Clothing Drive We continue to accept bagged or boxed donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, bedding, linens, curtains and towels. All donations may be left outside Pastor Christopher's garage doors in the Ackerman Avenue parking lot anytime.
