Good afternoon everyone! We began this month with the finale of Pastor Christopher's sermon series, "Salvation". He explained the meaning of salvation, based on scripture from Romans 5.
We also welcomed Ellen MacLeay as our guest pianist/organist today. Ellen has been teaching piano and voice throughout Bergen County for over 20 years. She holds a M.A. in piano performance from the City University of New York and has studied organ with Virgil Fox and piano with Earl Wild. In addition, she has two Arts Certificates from the National American Guild of Organists-Hymn and Service Playing. Ellen's students often perform in recitals in various churches throughout the area. You can view Ellen, as well as her students, on YouTube by clicking HERE.
Please take some time to watch Christopher's Chat, Pastor Christopher's weekly YouTube messages, below. This week's episode focuses on the meaning of salvation.
OTHER CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS
First Reformed Church Houston Response
The city of Houston and surrounding areas have endured catastrophic damage from Hurricane Harvey. It is important that we respond. In addition to continuous prayer, please join us in the following:
We will collect a special offering each Sunday of September. The proceeds will be sent through our denomination (Reformed Church in America) and their mission/relief fund, which will provide direct funds to people in Houston. Also, we have learned that baby/infant supplies are not high priority for the major relief organizations. Therefore, throughout the month of September, we will collect and send items such as: Diapers, baby formula, powder, wipes, and more.
Please join us in these two efforts. We welcome community participation as well.
Music Ministry Update
Thanks to Evelyn Leseberg and the Worship Committee, piano/organ substitutes have been secured through the end of October. In addition, we have already received nearly a dozen profiles for a permanent Worship Leader/Music Director. The Worship Committee will be reviewing them and meeting with candidates soon. If you have any questions or would like more information, please see Evelyn or Pastor Christopher.
Sunday School Rally Day
The first day of the new Sunday School year is coming up next week. The kick-off will be held on Sunday, September 10th during the 10:30am worship service. All students will be dismissed to meet their teachers and classmates during the service. A luncheon will follow the service downstairs in the Van Wyk Fellowship Hall. Starting on September 17th. Please sign up on the sheet on the hallway bulletin board if you are attending, and indicate if you are bringing a salad or dessert. There is also a sign up sheet for those who wish to assist with set up or clean up. Sunday School will meet on Sundays at 9am. Classes are being offered for students entering pre-k through 8th grade in September 2017. CLICK HERE to register your child for Sunday School.
National Back to Church Sunday
We are pleased to announce that we are participating in National Back To Church Sunday on September 17th at 10:30am. Back to Church Sunday is a yearly outreach effort that started in 2009 to encourage churches to welcome family, friends and neighbors back to church. We encourage you to invite family, friends and/or neighbors to join us in this national movement. All are welcome here - whether it's your first time or it's been a long time.
Sherry Dapcic, one of the members of the congregation, has volunteered to take over as the Bulletin Coordinator. She will receive training from Julie Kooistra prior to starting her new role.
Please check the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the upstairs kitchen for Sundays that remain open to host.
